Beekeeping has always been a fascinating blend of art and science, but recently, I came across a brilliant idea that takes it to a whole new level. I stumbled upon this concept on a beekeeping channel, and I couldn’t wait to share it with you. Brace yourself for an ingenious method of honey collection using none other than Mason jars!

The Idea behind It

Traditionally, beekeepers use frames in beehives to store honey. But this method introduces a fresh approach. Instead of the customary telescoping outer cover, a piece of painted plywood with holes that fit Mason jars is used. This allows bees to build their comb and store honey directly into the jars.

Making It Even Better

Inspired by this brilliant concept, I decided to put my own spin on it. I wanted to create a more durable and practical solution, so I reached out to my woodworking supplier, Pineapple Springs Woodware. Together, we decided that using a thicker plywood, around half an inch in thickness, would be ideal for supporting the weight of multiple jars filled with honey.

Building the Mason Jar Honey Harvesting System

Here are the steps I followed to construct my own Mason Jar Honey Harvesting System:

  1. Preparing the Plywood: I started by painting a thick piece of plywood. In hindsight, painting it after construction might have been a better idea.
  2. Placing the Jars: Next, I marked and drilled holes on the plywood, making sure to give enough space between the jars for easy unscrewing.
  3. Securing the Lids: Instead of simply placing the jars into the holes, I decided to screw the lids onto the base for a more secure hold. This would prevent the jars from moving when the bees are at work.
  4. Assembly: After drilling the holes, I glued and nailed the lids in place. I also caulked the outside to keep any bees from entering this modified hive section.
  5. Installing the Jars: Finally, I screwed in tiny wood screws at the top and sides of each lid for a snug fit. This step was vital to avoid any gaps that might attract pests like hive beetles.

The Final Setup and What to Expect

With the lids securely attached, I carefully screwed the jars onto them. To protect the system and make it compatible with regular hive operations, I planned to enclose it with a super and cover.

This DIY Mason Jar Honey Harvesting System is a testament to the innovative spirit in beekeeping. It simplifies the harvest, adds visual fascination to the process, and offers a unique way to observe the bees at work. In just a few weeks, I will check back to see the progress and success of this experiment.
